How to write your autobiography without words
Close your eyes and think back to your childhood.
What was your home like? The weather? The neighborhood?
In your mind, walk to where you usually found your Momma. Are you in the living room? The kitchen? On the porch? In the yard?
Earlier this week, I asked the members of The Heartfelt Motherhood Project to describe a particular scene. I said:
Recall a photo from your childhood with you & your Momma.
Now take a deep breath...
Describe her.
Tell me about her hair... is it long, short, straight, curled, up, or down? What color is it?
Tell me about her skin... is it soft, dry, sun-kissed, smooth, rough?
Are her nails manicured or painted?
What about her clothes? Is she wearing a dress, pants, shorts, blouse, t-shirt, sweater?
What is she doing? Reading, cooking, sewing, playing, relaxing, watching TV?
And her eyes... what color are they?
What did she smell like?
Just take her in for a minute.
I know it's really hard to get in front of the camera. Your list of insecurities is long.
But, be honest...
Don't you wish you had more photos with your Momma?
I know I do. It's not too late to document YOUR story! If you're reading this and you have a camera of any kind, you have all you need to begin taking heartfelt photos.
I just want to encourage you today to get in the photo with your children. Of course we want to capture all the details of their childhood. Just don't forget to document your motherhood story, too!
I've challenged myself to take a self portrait everyday in 2018.
In some shots, I'm alone; in others, my boys join me. When I'm not feeling confident about my appearance (which, let's tell the truth here, is hardly ever... workin' on that), I choose to photograph details about myself - my hair, eyes, hands, mouth, profile, jewelry, or clothing. You don't have to take full body shots (thank the Lord!)... just get in close. Experiment with angles & light. Have fun!
Photographs spark memories.
With each click of the shutter, you fan the flames of the fire that will burn long after you're gone. The pictures you capture today preserve a visual heritage for future generations.
You get to write your autobiography with your own camera!
How amazing is that? You are in charge of your own story. They say a picture is worth a thousand words... and if that's the case, you've got one epic to tell!
The Heartfelt Motherhood Project was created to help you do just that! I'd be honored to have you join us - we're a small group of kindred Mommas that will welcome you with open arms. After all...
Friendship is the finest balm,
Kat
